What is IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a procedure in which intense, rapid pulses of light penetrate into the deep layers of your skin. The light energy causes blood vessels below the surface of your skin to constrict, and therefore reduce redness, sun spots, freckles, and fine lines. IPL is an excellent way to transform blotchy skin or uneven skin tone into a more radiant complexion.

IPL therapy also promotes the production of new collagen to form below the surface of your skin, which helps fill in wrinkles and make your skin appear softer and more supple.

Am I a good candidate for IPL?

Dr. Burrell consults with you to determine if IPL is the best aesthetic procedure for your specific needs. Men and women who are good candidates include those with:

  • Blotchy skin
  • Discolored patches of skin
  • Sun spots
  • Rosacea
  • Freckles
  • Large pores
  • Wrinkles

Men and women with fair to light, untanned skin are ideal candidates for IPL treatments, as those with naturally dark skin sometimes experience changes in skin pigment after the IPL treatment. Also, if you are of Mediterranean descent, speak with Dr. Burrell to learn about any potential issues IPL may cause with your particular skin tone.

What can I expect during an IPL treatment?

Dr. Burrell or one of her trained medical team provides you with protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the bright light. You may also receive a gel on your face and to the IPL handpiece, which helps cool your skin and keep you comfortable during the treatment. You may feel a warm sensation from the light pulses that feel like the snapping of a rubber band. This is well-tolerated by most women and men.

Is there downtime?

There’s no downtime and minimal discomfort. IPL treatments typically take just a few minutes to an hour, depending on how large of an area you’re having treated. Some adults do experience redness or swelling after the treatment, but it disappears a short time later.

If you have questions about IPL treatments to help correct skin pigmentation and diminish wrinkles, Dr. Burrell invites you to make an appointment by calling the Aurora office, or you can make an appointment online.
