Lasik Q & A

What is LASIK surgery?

LASIK is a safe, extremely precise surgical procedure that uses the advanced excimer laser technology to improve vision. LASIK (Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis) is refractive eye surgery that allows men and women of all ages to see better and live more active, carefree lives. For many, the LASIK procedure restores eyesight so you no longer need to wear glasses or contacts.

LASIK is often so effective that men and women can pass a driver’s test without glasses or contacts. It’s a life-changing experience, and Dr. Burrell has nearly 20 years of experience performing LASIK surgeries, and has a less than 1% enhancement (redo) rate!

How does LASIK work?

The excimer laser is so precise that the procedure allows Dr. Burrell to meticulously reshape your cornea to improve your eye’s ability to refract light. During the procedure, Dr. Burrell creates a “corneal flap” using the Intralase laser. The corneal flap is an extremely thin layer of your cornea.

She folds the flap back and uses the excimer laser to send gentle pulses of ultraviolet light to reshape your cornea. The whole process only takes about a minute and is accurate within .25 microns. The laser can be adjusted to correct for myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.

With the cornea reshaped, Dr. Burrell puts the corneal flap back in place. Since the cornea has an incredible ability to heal itself, men and women typically recover from LASIK procedures rather quickly.

Is LASIK painful?

Not at all. Dr. Burrell uses numbing eye drops so you won’t feel anything during the LASIK procedure, and it’s complete in a matter of minutes. Afterward, you may feel mild discomfort that can be minimized with medication. In many cases, you’ll experience improved sight within the first 24 hours after surgery.

The majority of men and women return to their daily activities within a day after LASIK, but a small percentage experience temporary blurred or fluctuating vision. Dr. Burrell instructs you on what to do immediately following the procedure and during the healing process.
